Product Description

With this guidebook, photographers learn how to create stunning, professional images while avoiding the common pitfalls of using an on-camera flash. Techniques for using simple accessories—such as bounce cards and diffusers as well as how to improve a lighting scenario by enhancing it rather than overwhelming it—show photographers how to master this challenging aspect of portraiture. For wedding and environmental portrait photographers who must work in ever-changing lighting scenarios, executing these tips to evade flat, lifeless images with harsh shadows, washed-out skin tones, cavernous black backgrounds, and other unappealing visual characteristics results in not only better images, but happier clients and more sales.

FEATURES:
  • Understanding metering modes for flash photography exposures
  • Choosing the right flash mode for your image—whether it's manual, auto, or TTL
  • Flash sync speeds and dragging the shutter
  • Using flash to augment natural light
  • Flash modifiers for more refined effects
  • Mastering the ins and outs of bounce flash
  • Balancing flash with tungsten, flourescent, and other light sources
  • Using fill flash and controlling light ratios
  • Choosing the equipment that best suits your style of photography
  • Enhancing your results with off-camera flash

Neil van Niekirk's book is an excellent read for many reasons.

If you are a beginner, there is no better place to start to understand the interrelationship between aperture and shutter speed in order to produce very pleasing on-camera flash.
For those who understand the basic principles of zone photography, Neil's book fleshes out the importance of placing the most relevant tone in the photograph in the correct zone, in an appropriate position on the histogram.
As well, once finished with the book, and using Neil van Niekirk's methods of metering and flash exposure, the quality of the images made with on-camera bounce flash is nothing short of remarkable.
It certainly frees one up from carting around gear and in this regard, the techniques used in the book are very liberating.
The book is not at all gear oriented, and the principles therein will apply to any camera/flash DSLR.
I have already tried out his suggestions and they work a treat.
This is a very good book for enthusiasts to buy to learn professional on-camera flash techniques, or a book to buy as a professional if you want to make consistent flash exposures with the minimum of gear to cart around on location portraiture and weddings.
Neil van Niekirk is very generous with his knowledge, and the book contains absolutely no padding; just solid detailed information about the techniques of producing saleable professional images.
I am currently waiting on his forthcoming book on off-camera flash photography!!

4 out of 5 stars Worth it   July 9, 2010

I purchased this book to compliment other references I have on flash photography. Hesitant that some of the information may be redundant, I was pleased with the information this book contained. I have read it twice and have I am still devouring the techniques described. *Note: I have been shooting flash, both off and on camera for years. This book has some techniques I have not ran into.

5 out of 5 stars Indispensable Guide for On-Camera Flash   July 1, 2010

I wanted to add my voice to the other superlatives that appear here. This is a terrific book. I was looking for something to help me understand how to use my on-camera flash to good effect. Generally speaking I have tried to avoid on camera flash, and when I was forced to use it, the results were hit-or-miss. This book really helped me to understand how I could get better results more consistently, and without a bunch of expensive stuff, except the flash unit itself. (I learned from this book that I needed a flash unit with much more directional versatility.) The techniques are well-explained and are repeatable. There are many excellent examples (mostly wedding photos) in which the author explains exactly what he did to get the shot, including a breakdown of the settings he used for each one. In summary, if you are like me and you are tired of getting lousy flash photographs, or you don't know how to effectively use fill flash, this is a great book which I highly recommend.
