Product Description
Martin Evening's Adobe Photoshop for Photographers titles have become classic reference sources for photographers at all skill levels. Whether you are an accomplished user or just starting out, the Adobe Photoshop CS4 for Photographers book contains a wealth of practical advice, hints and tips to help you achieve professional-looking results.
Adobe Photoshop CS4 for Photographers begins with an overview of the Photoshop interface and the fundamentals of how to use Photoshop, followed by how to configure and optimize your computer's performance to run the program and then it dives straight into the essentials of Camera Raw image editing. The Sharpening chapter shows how to use the Camera Raw controls to obtain optimum capture sharpening and noise reduction and the Essentials chapter outlines how to work with all the basic image adjustment tools that are in the program, some of which have been there since the very beginning.
Practical workshops show you how to master the essential techniques, such as color correction, retouching techniques, toning a black and white image, creating composite images and so on. Each technique is described in step-by-step detail, showing exactly which command to use, whether you are working with a Mac or PC computer.
The accompanying DVD contains a Photoshop for Photographers Help Guide. This is supplied in a web browser format that you can either run from the DVD or copy to your computer hard disk for off-line viewing. The Help Guide contains a complete guide to all the tools and panels in Photoshop as well as other items in the program. It is like having an off-line manual with which to learn more about what each Photoshop tool and palette does. The guide also provides 120 minutes of movie tutorials on Photoshop CS4. 2 out of 5 stars Beware, figures and images are really small.   February 15, 2010
S. M. Cohn (San Antonio)
I wanted to let the potential buyer know that this text is very comprehensive and detailed, but I found myself unable to read much of the text with the figures due to small size. The material is extremely detailed and probably better aimed at folks who are experienced and young (with really good vision, as I could not read with progressive or bifocal lens!). I returned my copy and will try a different text. I am 20/20 with my glasses and have never had this problem with any other book, ever.

3 out of 5 stars Adobe Photoshop CS4 for Photographers   February 12, 2010

Overall this is a large book which it needs to be to cover photoshop, the presentation is nice and the photos are interesting. The problem for me as a photographer and photoshop teacher is that there isn't much new in this book. It's the same old thing an enhanced photoshop manual. I have over 40 books on photoshop and like another reveiwer I found the RealWorld series of photoshop books by Bruce Fraser and David Blattner to be the most comprhensive texts on photoshop available. However, I don't think we need another enhanced manual - I would like to see some tutorials showing some really creative techniques - not another book on how to push the buttons and drag the sliders thank you. Take for example the video series "Photoshop Top Secret" - I would love to see that as a book! If you don't own any books on photoshop and you are commercial photographer then its worth buying. I also bought Martin's book on Lightroom and after spending several days with the software came to the conclusion that for anyone that uses photoshop - lightroom just isn't worth the money - put your money towards taking a photoshop class or workshop instead. Or if you don't have money - download GIMP and Picasa for free.

Bottom line if I would have been able to see this book in a store before purchasing - I wouldn't have bought it- if you are photographer and don't own any books on photoshop then I it's worth having on your shelf. To his Credit the included DVD contains some images to play with.

5 out of 5 stars A well-organized and detailed guide to everything Photoshop   December 28, 2009
A. van Winkle (Seattle, WA)
As someone who's been using Photoshop for over ten years, I wasn't really sure whether getting a book would really provide all that much use, but after having Evening's guide on my desk for the last six months, I don't know what I would do without it.

While not necessarily inaccessible to the novice, this book is definitely directed towards those who know their way around Photoshop and want to learn to improve their skills and harness the full power of the software. It covers every feature and function; through detailed descriptions, high-quality before/after photos, and reference notes. This isn't a tutorial book or an instruction guide, so you don't have to be sitting in front of your computer to benefit from it. It's a detailed reference for the Photoshop software, which can be read and understood on its own and then applied (and referred back to) during use.

My favorite part about Evening's writing is the no-nonsense approach he takes to explaining the complex entity that is CS4. The pages are not padded with anecdotes and attempted humor, nor is he self-referential or "clever" with his words. The writing is crisp, straightforward, and to the point. Which isn't to say that it's a dry or pedantic, quite the opposite, but if you're looking for a humorous chit-chat full of stories and parenthetical jokes, this isn't the book for you.

I've read through this book multiple times, and always keep it on my computer desk when I'm working. It's the best thing that's happened to Photoshop since smart objects, and I strongly recommend it to anyone with an interest in using CS4.

5 out of 5 stars A very through and complete Photoshop reference book   December 15, 2009
Polar Reader (Fairbanks, Ak United States)
I bought this as a general reference book for cs4 and another book just for training. While doing the tutorials in the Classroom book I would get stuck on a procedure which was not well explained and I would open this book and get a better explanation and be back up to speed. Not a book you'll want to read cover-to-cover but a very handy reference to have on hand.

5 out of 5 stars The Best On Photoshop CS4 Out There   November 8, 2009
Daniel du Toit (Westboro, MA USA)
This is truly the most amazing book on PS CS4. I thoroughly enjoyed the first chapters on Adobe Camera Raw - ACR is brushed off by many authors as merely a tool to convert RAW images to JPG after performing very limited basic adjustments. Well, Evening showed me there is much more to it than that.

This book is a comprehensive reference as well as instructional guide lined with many clear concise examples.

Boring? No, definitely not! For MAC users only? No, not the copy I received from Amazon.

This is my first book by this author, it won't be the last - excellent!
