Product Description

Inside burning buildings, Captain Caleb Holt lives by the firefighter's adage: Never leave your partner.

Yet at home, in the cooling embers of his marriage, he lives by his own rules.

Growing up, his wife Catherine always dreamed of marrying a loving, brave firefighter . . . just like her father. Now, after seven years of marriage, she wonders when she stopped being "good enough." Countless arguments and anger have them wanting to move on to something with more sparks.

As they prepare for divorce, Caleb's father challenges him to commit to a 40-day experiment: "The Love Dare." Wondering if it's even worth the effort, Caleb agrees, for his father's sake more than for his marriage.

Surprised by what he discovers about the meaning of love, Caleb realizes that his wife and marriage are worth fighting for. His job is to rescue others. Now Captain Holt is ready to face his toughest job ever . . . rescuing his wife's heart.

5 out of 5 stars Thanks for the novel; can't wait to get my DVD   January 6, 2009
I saw the DVD Facing the Giants several times before reading the novel. I bought the novel when in the states intending to do the same thing; watch the DVD first a few times then read the book, as it would fill in what was missing in the DVD. I had some spare time in Bangkok last week, so I decided to read the novel and I'm so glad I did. The one thing that came out of it is how selfish I really am in a relationship with a woman in which we are contemplating marriage. I loved the details Eric Wilson added and didn't want to put the book down. I can't wait to see the DVD. I really think everyone needs to read this book and see the movie (in which order is not important). I think in this case a lot of questions I might have when watching my DVD will have already been answered in the novel. I also got The Love Dare, and I want to read it all the way through...hopefully I will soon have the opportunity to take it with the woman I mentioned above. I will look forward to your next novelization. Thank you and God bless you

4 out of 5 stars Even for those whose marriages are good   January 2, 2009

I have not seen the movie and am unable to compare the book with the film. This novelization (the movie came first & the book was adapted from the screenplay) was an easy read ~ though perhaps partially because hubby was off for the holidays and I had some uninterrupted time. There were a few things that were somewhat predictable, yet entirely probable to be more reflective of the types of "affairs" that men have verses those of women.
With neither being a Christian, Caleb is a firefighter more dedicated to his work than his wife and when Catherine feels appreciated more at work than home, she throws in the towel. Caleb has an addiction to internet porn and I thank the author for not sharing the "gory details" with the reader. Feeling it impossible to compete with his online activities, Catherine basks in the attention of a coworker. I found it quite realistic that neither were treated as a "criminal" solely responsible for the breakdown in communication and that there is no single "event" that *breaks* or *fixes* the marriage.

I think those who are in the "comfortable" stage of marriage may realize that is not always the best thing. I enjoyed, "Love is a decision" and that we are in charge of our hearts, not the other way around.

***POTENTIAL SPOILER***
I was a little disappointed about the ending. It was a little "too happy" and overly "and all their dreams came true". I believe the emphasis should have been on the rebuilding of the marriage and renewing the vows, not the boat. It seems that in the spirit of having faith change and rescue our marriage, happiness does *not* flow from worldly possessions.

1 out of 5 stars save your time see the movie   December 6, 2008

This one was my bad I didn't realize it was a screen play. So it's exactly like the movie. Which was ok and went much faster than reading this thing.

3 out of 5 stars Great Tool to Improve Marriage   December 6, 2008

I bought this book because the movie wasn't available in my area and I didn't want to wait for the DVD to come out. I also bought the Fireproof couples kit which has a DVD with clips from the movie and a workbook for each spouse with discussion questions plus activities for couples to go through together. Both of these, the book and the kit, have been helpful in building a stronger marriage.
The book is based on the movie so it's not the best literature in the world. I felt that some scenes probably come off better in the movie. That said, it's a wonderful story that brought laughter and tears. I believe every couple will relate in one way or the other to the characters in the story.
